anyone need a bunch of small rusty bits o' metal?

I hadn't realized how bad the compulsion to pick up every beautifully-rusted can, bottlecap, and small mechanical dingus was until an old housemate called me to come get some stuff I'd left in the basement, and there was a whole box marked "Lisa's rusty s**t". From like, seven years ago. Anyway, the project that was going to utilize all these bits never materialized, and I am DOWNSIZING.

Anyway in the SF Bay area a rust fetishist like myself with an actual artistic purpose for this stuff?

Hey y'all, looking for some advice for some projects and just general knowledge.

In putting some stuff together I need to make a relatively strong frame in some pretty weird shapes. The best solution I've come up with is some sort of metal wiring with just the right rigidity/malleability ratio. It should be something that I can mould with my hands and/or pliers but will still retain its shape when bearing a one or two pound load. Thoughts?

Paper Tree ver. 2.0

I am working now on Paper Tree ver. 2.0. It is made from office paper that would have been shreadded and thrown out and cardboard tubes. The main trunk is 8' tall and was salvaged from a dumpster. Everything else comes from my graphics job. The first one was about 6' high when finished and was displayed and burned here in Florida at a local burn called Preheat. I was overwhelmed by the response to it and have really enjoyed seeing the pictures people took.

After the first one was gone my apartment felt empty without it being there. I also started recieving messages from people who were sad that it was gone and they never got to see it. The next day Paper Tree ver. 2.0 was born. A couple weeks later it is at the point you see now and will continue to grow until August when it will be transported to BRC if everything falls into place.

I have recieved a lot of interest from people across the country who have been following it's progress on myspace. It's really amazing to read the comments and questions from everyone.

**************************************************

Greetings to all my relations.

This is the last step of our project History Watch. If History is
defined and known by the texts, we can now add to this definition the
recorded events of the filmed archives. Animated images are harder to
deny than printed words. Our objective is to spread out freely some of
the little broadcast, even hidden informations about our collective
History.

We put online a collection of 391 documentaries and other selected and
recut videos, to offer to a wide public the best of the infos
available on the net in english and in french. If you are interested,
you have the time, the right equipment and connection, all you have to
do is open the joint document and decompress it if needed (but normaly
your system should do it automaticaly). You'll find therein nine links
that will open the torrents for the nine DVDs we compiled (around 4.6
Gig each, for a total of a little over 41 G, being over 100 hours of
videos).

Otherwise, you can go directly to btjunkie.com and search for these titles.

Torrents are a system of peer to peer data transfer. The more people
download a torrent, the faster it spreads and the longer it stays on
the net. If you don't have a bittorrent software, we suggest that you
download uTorrent on utorrent.com. If you want to participate in
facilitating the diffusion of these infos about our collective
History, download these torrents on as many computers as possible,
whether it is in cybercafes. It takes one or two minutes to open up
the links and the downloading will keep proceeding on its own.

Please spread this out, take part in this action for social education
on a planetary scale. Thanks.

Whale Skeleton Update 2.0 Go and see it, it's big! And cool looking !

The Whale Skeleton is a 85%recycled LARGE scale sculpture I made for Burning man in 07. It is made of 5 gal. white plastic buckets, iron pipe ,a huge fiberglass water tank cut into ribs, cardboard tubes and plywood.
The Whale Skeleton sculpture is currently set up and available for public viewing at 255 Branceforty in Santa Cruz,CA.. That is only slightly past the Mystery Spot (tourist attraction), across the very next concrete bridge, right after Sun Villa sign, and look left and up slightly. It is on private property but the owner is cool as long as people are respectful and aware. He and his tenants have been very supportive and patient with the scheduling of the installation .
The Sculpture itself is a little shabby looking right now from Playa wear and tear and the stresses of winter storage and re-setup. It is still impressive though. Touch ups and refinements commence in mid-April.
Any Burners wanting to be involved in the set up of this project on The Playa at BM 08, please inquire with me here on Tribe. It took one person 8 hours with an additional 2 person, 3 hour session to set up last time on this site. The systems have been streamlined and with additional crew , the time could be roughly the same, taking into account fatigue and environmental factors at BRC.

I just wanted to stop by and say hi to everyone and I'm going to try to make a conscious effort to pay more attention to the tribe. I've just really have been focusing more on photography lately and not doing so much assemblage.

Hey,
My sister, and her boyfriend Chris Green are both in LA right now for the opening of this new children's museum called the Skirball. It's a secular, interactive retelling of flood myths from around the world, the Arc story for example. Chris was comissioned to design and build the many many animal puppets that are now on display there, and one of the things that makes them special, is that they all use reasigned materials... there are some photos of the stuff he made at this page: http://web.mac.com/cmgreenkinetics/iWeb/Site/Kinetics.html

Take care!~

If so let me know why you think you would be a good mod, and who ever has the most interesting answer (and also has a healthy level of involvement in the tribe) will be the new mod.

Arts & Crafts Group

An arts & crafts group will happen weekly at my house at a convenient time for as many participants as possible so y'all can make it! The way it works is you bring your art or craft project to work on, the group gathers together in my living room, and we get our projects done in an inspired atmosphere of conviviality.

One of the purposes of this group is to eventually build community ties. Other possible results, aside from working on our projects, could be future art & craft collaborations, field trips (such as to the first and last thursday artwalks), or other events, as well as conversations leading perhaps to a greater understanding of art & craft or enhanced inspiration for individual projects.

There is no age limit to this group, but it is limited to women. Please indicate your preferred day(s) and time(s) to meet.

Wednesday nights for now 6:30 - 8:00. In Southeast Portland, Oregon. 503-922-2484

My first completed commission - a moment of pride and humility

My work is mostly created by commission for custom work, as I most enjoy creating pieces with the recipient in mind and according to their personal desires. My website can be seen at http://www.fragileindustries.com.

My most recent commission was for a wedding shrine for an outdoor wedding in Oregon. When I create an assemblage shrine / altar / devotional object, I start with a three-dimensional wood base such as shelving, a wall or tabletop cabinet or box. I usually find them at garage sales and thrift stores. It can be a memory object, including momentos or photos of the client's own choosing, and I build thematically from there. In the case of a wedding, special event or occassion, a shrine can memorialize a past wedding or be a part of the ceremony and/or event itself. They can also be wonderful gifts for such occasions.

This piece was for inclusion in the wedding ceremony and celebration, a three-day event which sounded like one part Burning Man, one part Renaissance Fair, and a great portion of the creativity and originality of the delightful couple themselves. The bride and groom wanted their guests to complete the shrine with embellishments I provided in keeping with their theme. I duplicated the beautiful colors of the invitation and painted the base, a intricately carved antique wall cabinet about 18"x9"x4" with two doors opening into a large interior recess, and two drawers underneath. I applied a collage of images, both those provided by the couple, and from Asian and Indian art (their theme) on flat areas of the surface, and applied gold leaf to the molding and elements of the carvings. I antiqued the finish with a variety of glazes and shimmery acrylics, and sent it off with more collage images (peel and stick), handmade paper on which the guests could write their good wishes to put in the drawers, and three-dimensional objects that would coordinate well, such as hand-blown glass beads, Asian coins, hand-painted and embellished tiles, pressed flowers, and so on. Most of these elements were recycled or salvaged items. I even included an easy-to-use adhesive method to avoid sticky mess. The couple was ecstatic and the guests had a great time helping to create a completely personal work of art that will have great meaning for years to come.

More than any money received, more than the confidence boost of actually completing a paid commission at last, I was humbled and honored to contribute to such a special moment in the lives of these wonderful young people.

Selected photos of this semi-completed work and its embellishments as I sent them out can be seen on my Tribe photo album (accessible by a link under my photo on my personal page) I'd post the link, but the posting system here on tribe doesn't seem to accept long URLS . I will include photos from the ceremony and the finished product when I receive them. My Tribe album also includes selected images of my other work: altered books and shrines in various styles.

If you are interested in a more detailed look at my work and descriptions of my process, along with explanations of how I approach altered art and assemblage, visit http://www.fragileindustries.com, or contact me at info@fragileindustries.com. I look forward to hearing from other artists and those interested in obtaining a unique and personal work of their own.

Heard of the Albany Landfill and its salvaged art work? If not get involved and help preserve the area for art, the property will become a part of the Parks dept. but I am going to be proposing to them and several other organizations that might be able to help to preserve a portion of this area and curate salvaged art work for the public. I need all the help I can get.

Hi all!
We had our furnace replaced today, and I asked the installer the fate of the old one, and he said, "to the dump."

Well, it had a couple neat looking grates on the front and back, and a ton of 5/16 sheet metal screws, so I told the installer I was going to take some of it apart for art materials...

About 2 hours later, when he was finished, he only had to haul away the outside panels and sheet metal frame, and the giant blower (minus every screw in it.) I, in return, got all KINDS of neat looking pieces parts of precision cut and punched metal pieces, some nice new pieces of sheet metal (leftovers from the installation), and a bunch of 5/16 screws that I can add to who knows what. I also saved the wires for something, although I haven't a clue at present...

Ooooh, free, cool, salvage goodies! But boy, I'm tired, and will sleep good tonight!

For necklaces:
I collect the thick elastic bands from around produce, (broccoli, asparagus...) There are a good variety of colours.
I thread them together and sometimes weave in the plastic nubs that hold together bags, or use some twist ties in there as well.
I like to add in some natural stuff too, like soft pieces of wood, or beach glass.
These naturalistic items compliment the plastic bits well.

I have a project that needs old books, specifically just the "spines" of old books, preferably books that look "leather bound" or tome-like. Does anybody know if used books stores ever throw out outdated encyclopedias and the like?

hello tribers
this is a personally hand-typed request for your help
not an automated advertisement looking to generalize...

The Art Exchange: what do you need? what do you want to get rid of? Or are you just looking for some extra cash, some inspiration, or bargain gratification? You don't need to be an "artist" to enjoy this space, it is more on the level of an indoor flea market that has whatever you need and may also have a movie playing on a giant projector screen, or a buffet of tainted goodies.
We are trying to encourage people to re-evaluate their garbage. Most of us at the Art and Found warehouse are dumpster divers and see how much people waste every day. I don't know about you, but I'm sick of paying for things that I only use once, or paying a tax on something that is already overly priced.

WHAT IF... We didn't need money for anything but food and rent? What if all the things you want to buy along the way, you can get by trading something you are about to throw to the curb? Imagine if this idea took off, and eventually you could barter a deal with your landlord and get out of paying rent. Think of the people you would be connected with, the events you would hear about along the way, and the elimination of stress over being poor.

The Art and Found: Its a warehouse in West Oakland filled to its brim with pretty much everything/anything: clothes, furniture, instruments, tools, computers, bikes, car parts, costumes, ART SUPPLIES, craft supplies, collectibles, jewelry.... I mean everything. And its the place you can sell your stuff at, and its the place you can call if you are looking for something to buy at a cheaper rate, and its the place that is going to hopefully take back what we have invested in capitalism so we can start living off the waste of it instead.

I'm getting pretty excited

As a start... Become a member of the Art Exchange Tribe
Call us if you need something/want to sell something...
(518) 435 5924
check it out with your own eyes: THIS SATURDAY!!! And every Saturday
Open Flea Market from noon to dinner time
THANK YOU FOR READING THIS long ass thing

Olivia Royale
Director of the Art Exchange

Got 10 mins today? WIN $1,000 bucks for your Art

Got 10 mins today? WIN $1,000 bucks for your Art

Make a DFILM about your ART today that you would like to bring to Burning Man 2005 and enter to win a $1,000 BUCKS. Deadline is MIDNIGHT tonight

It is really easy to make a Dfilm and it takes about 10 mins. It's like a comic book where you can talk about your Art project.

This is where you go to make the FILM www.dfilm.com/index_moviemaker.html

All the details about this Penny Grant Art proposal is here www.borg2.org/artists.php3

Don't FEAR the PENNIES - want the pennies, win the pennies.

Don't be scared that you will be stuck with 200 lbs of pennies. At least half of this is already rolled , the rest is mixed coin, already cleaned and sorted (no pig lard) and the winner will also get the rolling tools to finish the rest.

We also welcome OUT OF STATE entries...don't worry we won't send you 200 lbs of pennies thru the mail. If an out of state winner does win the vote -- we will find a solution. There are ways and we will find them and have fun doing it!

You CAN enter the Penny Grant and also still be eligible for the main BORG2 Grant. Also, the dfilm is not the method for application for the main grant -- that info will be posted shortly.

SO spread the word to all your artists friends! This is roughly $1,000 dollars and there is no strings attached -- Want money? We got it! Deadline for Dfilm entries is Wed. To vote you need to sign-up for the Bullhorn by wed. midnight. Full details are here:
www.borg2.org/artists.php3

And as always remember you can donate to the Art Fund at anytime...have you donated today?
www.borg2.org/donate.php3

i'm throwing an event next friday at Infinite Kaos in SF celebrating my new cd Gravity - i'm hoping to have flowers in the decor but am working with a modest budget - anyone have any tips on getting flowers that have been or will be thrown away and could get some good use for one night before flopping?

any suggestions or connections would be most welcome!

many thanks,

what do you consider to be the difference btwn 'salvage' art and 'assemblage' art?? i'm personally not sure if there is one and i wondered what everyone's input on this might be.
